The girls played much better than I expected on Sunday after Thursday's scattered, unfocused practice. Winning would have been nice however coming up 3 points short is a great lesson in preparation. We are now tied for second place in D4W with 4 wins and 3 losses.

We have the tools needed to attack a zone. I will spend the next few  weeks reminding the girls of such as in the second half of the season that will be all that week will face.

Our next "big" games are Mansfield (6 wins, 1 loss) on Feb 23 and undefeated Weston on March 2.  Between now than then we play Wayland (1 win  to Natick, 5 losses), Reading (WHITE) (2 wins, 3 losses - Sunday's game isn't posted yet), and Sudbury (4 wins, 2 losses). I like that we have our two toughest match up right before the league  tournament.

I had a parent comment that our defense looked pretty good except for the lack of recover after helping. (Said parent was too kind to mention the lack of rebounding.)

We are still slow (for the most part) to recover on Defense. This is a new concept for most of the team. That will come with experience. I was happy with our defense yesterday. They did well what they know to do. The other team had five different players score and only on to make more than 2 baskets. That one player, however, was key. She dropped 14 points on us, 4 each quarter except the 3rd.

Our supplemental defenses are not even a work in progress. I need to add a diamond and one to stop players like # 21 and a triangle and two to stop teams with 2 shooters. It will still be DD (our main defense which is a man zone hybrid) BUT only 4 or 3 players run the DD while the a defender or two plays Havoc on the shooters. Being great at these is a year or so away as we are that far away from being good at Havoc.

We need to work, work, work on Havoc for stalls at the end of games and to be able to do well at the diamond and one and the triangle and two. Havoc is what we call our soccer style man to man. Our help and recover man to man we call Chaos, which the girls are just learning. You might not see it in games until this summer. We are still terrible at both. I have yet to add a zone. When I do it will be an aggressive risk taking corn trapping 23 and a wall the middle 32..

We will continue to review traps in the corners and at the half line in the half court and at the side lines during our press but we are a year from being fair at trapping. Once we can trap and have master Chaos, we will be ready to learn 23.

On offense, I need to reinforce that attack means beat the defense down the floor and get the lay up and, if the defense is set, move on to five out, four out or three out (what ever that shift is assigned to play). That attack option is open every transition with either Tayja or Vienna bringing the ball down the floor as both have the speed, aggression and ball handling skills to beat the defense. I also need to reinforce the need for EVERYONE to run  wide of the ball and try to get ahead of the ball.

Tayja's hero ball killed us in the fourth quarter. In her immaturity she thinks attack means thoughtlessly driving to the basket which works against man to man. Her lack of focus had her flinging threes when there was still 1:30 on the clock when all we need was a 2 and a stop to tie.  Normally she is great at clock management and knowing how much time we have on the clock. Tayja was also playing mad in the 4th quarter, which is not normal for her. All the girls were pissed about the opposing coach's poor behavior on the side lines. They will get plenty of time in the coming years to get used to it because in the higher levels of youth basketball, that ugly behavior from coaches tends to be the norm.

Another parent asked why I did not switch out of equal playing time to make sure that we won. As the other coaches behavior deteriorated, Jason and I talked about it briefly as we both thought it would be fun to "punish" him. I decided to stick to the normal plan since getting to play meaningful minutes is in the best interest of the girls. These games don't mean a thing. We are building for the future. Every player needs to play meaningful minutes to be prepared for High School Varsity when the games do count.
