3 0n 3 Teams
There will be two Mass Premier 3 on 3 Teams each made up of four players that will play August 2nd- August 4th.  I love 3 on 3 HALF-COURT basketball. It quickly improves a young player’s long-term development. Players touch the ball more often. More touches on the ball is a very good thing. In the 5 on 5 game, players can go almost the whole game without touching the ball. When there are only six (3 on 3) players on the court, players are more inclined to run the pick-and-roll, set screens, basket cut and start to figure things out for themselves.

Destroyers I 6th Grade Team
00 - Jomi L. - 3rd grader, never played before but has practiced all spring and summer with my teams.

The 6th grade team won the Lower Middle School Girls championship. Every player and every parent had a good time.

 2012 - 13 Winter Teams

Marian B

My Marian CYO B Team, called Marian B, played in the Girls Junior Division for players in the 4th and 5th grades. The "A" team had 5 - 5th graders and 4 - 4th graders, had the better players to start the season and looked better on paper (if you removed Tayja from the equation who averaged 20 points and 26 rebonds a game) because the A team was bigger, more experienced and more athletic and all the 5th graders played for me the season before. During the draft I let the other coach take the players he wanted except we kept our own child. I believe in coaching the player in front of me.

After four games - all losses - (including  2 double digit losses to my team), he asked that I trade my top two players who were not named Tayja for what he considered his bottom two. I declined. Instead I invited all of his 5th graders to practice with my travel team described below.  After loosing 5 in a row his team, behind the paint hunting and spacing that I installed in his 5th graders, - won 5 out of their last 7 games to end the season strong.

Our coaching styles are different. I do not care about winning. My goal was to make every player better. I did not assign positions nor teach plays. At this age, for me, it is about dribbling with either hand (eyes up is a bonus as is having a low dribble), staying between your man and the basket (stopping the ball as it goes by you is a bonus), moving without the ball, hustling down the floor in transition and learning Layers 1, 2 and 4 of the Read and React offense.

We practiced once a week for 75 minutes and had two practices before the first game of the season. Six of the nine of my players had not played any sort of basketball before and the three who had all played for me the year before. Because we work 80 percent of our practices with everyone having a ball in hand, they got better at hanging on to the ball. Because I preached attack, attack, attack, EVERYONE on the team took shots. We had games where 6 out of 9 scored.

The high lights of the 2012 winter CYO season are:

1. Seven of the nine players scored during the season
2. Nine of the nine could bring the ball up the floor with out pressure and 4 with some pressure.
3. Everyone could find and maintain the 5 Out spacing even if the the gym floor was not marked with a three point line
4. Everyone could stay with their mark on defense
5. Everyone now loves the game

Because we worked on man to man with help and did one on one drills every practice and two on two drills most practices all improved on defense.  Since they are too small to be effective shooting at 10 foot baskets, I teach them that defense is the most important part of the game. Because we worked on motion for at least 10 minutes out of every practice and I encourage it during scrimmages, all got pretty good at moving with out the ball - when they remember that they are on offense. I teach them that moving with out the ball is the second most important part of the game. Those are the two things that I stress every practice and every game - defense and moving with out the ball.

Most of my CYO players are too small to make baskets. I measured success for them by how well the stayed in front of their man on defense. We spent 100 percent of our time on individual player skills drilled out of the 5 Out. Every one of my players improved a LOT over the course of the season except for my 2rd graders who will not make much basketball progress until her fitness and desire gets better. She improved, just not at the rate as everyone else.

I worked on basic skills, fundamentals and team work at practice AND during the games. My clueless kids got a little more playing time than my better players because they needed it more. Everyone took turns bringing the ball in and up the floor with a goal of everyone being successful at it. EVERYONE on my team is encouraged to shoot (except Tayja who is not allowed to shoot if we are ahead.) We didn't run any plays or worry about picks. We worked on everyone being in motion. I teach them that if they are moving with out the ball, they are right. We worked on staying between the ball and the basket. My pre season goal was "If I can get them to cut to the basket after every pass by the last game of the season, I can call the season a personal success. If every player can dribble with both hands by the end of the season, it will be a team success." We reached both goals while finishing with an 11 – 2 record, averaging 31.7 points per game and holding the opponents to 22.3 points per game. Our final loss was in the Championship game of the league tournament. Click here for a link to the tournament bracket.

In the fall, Tayja will not play in the CYO. It seems wrong to tell a 10 year old that she is not allowed to score. The other 5th graders will move up to the next CYO age division or go to a 6th grade travel team. I hope to keep the all 5 of my younger players and add more underage younger players that I can keep for a couple of years.

Framingham Flyers 6th Grade Blue

My Flyers team played in the 6th grade Metro West Travel Girls  Division 5 for players in the 6th graders. We did not play a single team that was not created solely of 6th graders. I had 2 - 4th graders, 3 - 5th graders and 3 - 6th graders.  We also did not play any teams with less than 12 players and 15 was the norm. I had 8.

My approach was the same as it was with my CYO team except we did more skill work, more dribbling and more layers of the Read and React. I held three practices a week - including once a week with our opponent in the town next door.  Most players made two of the three every week. A few made all of them. Every player was exposed to all of the Level One skills. I invited all of the 5th grade girls from both Marian CYO teams (see above) to practice with us.

We scrimmaged the 5th grade boys or the 6th grade boys once a week. We scrimmaged the 7th grade boys the week before the league tournament. We has a practice with the 8th grade girl's A team where they press us for an hour. We scrimmaged the local charter middle school's girls team - twice. We scrimmaged a near by team in the division above us.

We finished with an 11 – 4 record, averaging 29.9 points per game and holding the opponents to 24.9 points per game. Our final loss was in the Championship game of the league tournament.

The high lights of the 2012 winter Travel season are:
1. Everyone got over their fear of playing against boys.
2. We had games where 4 of the 8 players scored and everyone scored over the course of the season.
3. We could run the offense as long as it took to distort the zone.
4. We could break a press.
5. EVERYONE is playing together for me in the summer league.
