Yes, losing stinks.

As much as losing stinks, I do hope we can all agree that losing a basketball game is not the end of the world. As important as basketball is to us all on the team, you have to keep things in perspective.

Nevertheless, I still stand by my opening statement--losing stinks.

Even though losing is not the end of the world, losing should hurt. When you invest an inordinate amount of time, effort, and love into something like the game of basketball, losing should hurt. If it doesn't hurt, then you don't care. And if you don't care, you shouldn't be playing.

However, you can't let it hurt for long. You can't wallow in self pity. You must lick your wounds, learn from the loss, and quickly move past it. If you don't, it will happen again. And it will continue to happen until the reasons you have been losing are corrected.

We lost Sunday because our team defense was, for the most part, AWFUL. We played with a lack of effort. We played scared. The other team outworked us. They out rebounded us. They out hustled us.

There is never an excuse for playing with a lack of effort. That is absolutely unacceptable. I can accept (and admit) when the other team was better. I can accept (and admit) when we had an off night with poor shooting. I cannot (and will not) accept losing from a lack of effort.

We gave up 53 points to a team that normally scores 30. They got 20 more points from us than they had scored against ANYONE all season. That is why we lost this one.

I am proud that we showed proper sportsmanship to the other team and the officials, that we played like a team and that we did not make excuses. We handled the disappointment of losing in overtime with character.

I am not proud of our lack effort on defense. All that defense takes is effort. You must have the personal pride needed to play it well. You must have the HEART to go after rebounds. You must have the physical and mental toughness to deny lay ups.

THIS game, THIS loss, needs to be a learning experience for our next game as well as for the rest of the season. We play our toughest opponents for our last three games of the regular season.

Next up is Sudbury who is tied with us for second place in D4W with 5 wins and 4 losses. Sudbury beat Reading (White). Then we play Mansfield who has 7 wins and 2 losses. Our last game is against the undefeated Weston.

We must fix our defense now. FEAR NO ONE.
